Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat is Quarter Sawing?Quarter sawn lumber is cut so that the growth rings of the tree are perpendicular to the board's broadest face, as opposed to flat-sawn lumber, where the growth rings are parallel to the board's broadest face. Quarter sawing produces both quarter and rift sawn lumber. When a log is quarter sawn, a species' unique grain is visibly enhanced. This sawing technique is more time consuming and a less efficient use of a log, and is thus more expensive. For more information about quarter sawn wood, see http://www.hardwood.org/display_article.asp?ID=357. What is our lumber Drying Method?Ogonek Custom Hardwoods uses Nyle dehumidification kilns to dry beams and lumber. We recommend drying lumber to a moisture content of 16-20% for construction-grade material, and 6-8% for furniture-grade material. When ordering kiln-dried wood, please take necessary drying time into consideration. Lower moisture contents require longer drying times. Kiln-drying is not recommended for lumber intended for outdoor applications. What is sustainable harvesting? We are committed to the sustainable harvesting of timber resources. Our timbers and lumber products are sawn from trees felled due to weather, new construction, timber-stand improvement cuts, or yard hazards in Northeast Ohio. Trees that normally end up as firewood or garden mulch instead become beautiful, high quality building components for your home. |
