White Oak Beams

White Oak is a strong and heavy choice for timbers. It is one of the most durable timbers available for constructing outdoor frames or parts of frames that may be exposed to wet conditions. White Oak’s strength and flexibility make it an excellent choice for curved frame members. Traditionally this oak is seen as sill plates in older structures and as an important asset to ship building. The flat sawn grain is very similar to Red Oak with a tan color, but White Oak tends to have more and larger ray-fleck when quarter sawn. White Oak does not split as much as Red Oak, but still more than the White pine, with no impact on its structural strength. It is available in long lengths that require less support.
